Introduction from page 75
|
In her first article about this vast and mysterious Indian Ocean landmass (Trouble in Paradise, Africa – Environment & Wildlife, Vol. 1 No. 1), Cathy Barnard introduced readers to the extraordinary diversity of life on the island and the high levels of endemism which so intrigue biologists. She revealed a country of great natural beauty and potential, but also pointed to the serious threats of unsustainable slash-and-burn farming and the resultant loss of precious topsoil. Madagascar has one of the highest population growth rates in the world, currently greater than three per cent a year, and the understandable hunger for arable land is already pushing ecosystems beyond viable limits.
In this second of a three-part series of articles on the island, Cathy Barnard picks up the threads, exploring traditional attitudes towards the environment and how conflicting needs often place the Malagasy people at odds with their natural world.
