This issue of Africa Geographic features a 2-page article (pp24&26) about the illegal logging of rosewood in Madagascar. The article by Stephen Davis and Jacqueline van Meygaarden is entitled "Rainforest Robbery" and focuses mainly on the protected forest of the Masoala peninsular.
This issue also includes a piece on Madagascar in the "Africa at a Glance" section (p14). The short piece, entitled "Rarest Lemur Boost", describes scientific work that indicates that the greater bamboo lemur (Prolemur simus) - the world's rarest lemur - exists in more localities than previously thought.

Article Summary from page 24
|
When Stephen Davis and his wife Jacqueline van Meygaarden visited Madagascar, they found the country to be tranquil and the people friendly, with no sign of the political unrest thy had expected. More alarming, though, was the overt - and illegal - trade in rosewood timber, one of the nation's most prized possessions.
