- It is very unclear what species is intended to be depicted here. The white-headed or white-fronted brown lemur, Eulemur albifrons, has been connected with the synonym Lemur bicolor in the past, and that species' colouration very roughly corresponds to the illustraton, but the form of the feet would suggest this creature may not be lemur at all. The matter is further confused by the suggestion of the original accompanying text that it is a native of South America, from where no prosimian – let alone lemur – is known. Mittermeier et al, in Lemurs of Madagascar, 3rd ed (2010) speculate that it is in fact a crowned lemur, Eulemur coronatus.
