Hardcover Book
This book, written by an English missionary, describes Madagascar before colonial times, with a particular focus on its relations with France. In addition to nineteenth-century history, the book has a chapter on each of the flora and fauna of Madagascar.
It is bound in blue cloth with gilt illustrations of "Royal Street, Tamatave" on the cover and "The Governor of Tamatave" [Rainamdriamampandry] on the spine. A native-carved panel is embossed on the back cover. All three illustrations also appear as black-and-white plates in the book, along with 14 further plates and a fold-out map of Madagascar.
