Ce n'est pas une encyclopédie, mais un manuel destiné à tous, élèves, étudiants, adultes, étrangers en séjour. Après une fresque historique reprenant les principaux événements et les acteurs de la vie de Madagascar, il présente une courte biographie de trois cents personnages qui ont compté dans la vie politique, religieuse, culturelle, militaire et sociale de la Grande Île. Ces hommes et ces femmes sont malgaches, portugais, français, anglais, norvégiens. Marins, gouvernants, hommes d'églises, écrivains, artistes, militaires, architectes, négociants, aventuriers, ils ont vécu entre le XVe et le XXe siècle. Le pays porte de manières différentes la marque de leur passage : nom de lieux, noms de rues, monuments, institutions, traditions.

Chacun pourra découvrir ou redécouvrir dans ce livre le nom et la vie de ceux et celles qui ont contribué à construire le pays malgache que nous connaissons aujourd'hui et réaliser que chacun a une place unique dans le temps et le lieu où il vit.

Un ouvrage simple et clair, qui saura, par les grands services qu'il rendra à chacun, devenir indispensable dans la famille.

Dominique Ranaivoson est chercheur en littérature comparée, critique littéraire et enseignante. Elle a suivi des études de lettres et d'histoire à Reims et à Paris avant de soutenir une thèse sur la littérature francophone à Madagascar à l'université de Paris 13 en 2002. Elle collabore régulièrement à diverses rencontres et revues internationales universitaires traitant de la littérature francophone. Française, mariée à un Malgache, mère de quatre enfants, elle vit en France et se rend régulièrement à Madagascar.

This is not an encyclopaedia, but a handbook intended for all: pupils, students, adults, visiting foreigners. After a historical fresco showing the principal events and the actors in the life of Madagascar, it presents a short biography of three hundred characters significant in the political, religious, cultural, military and social life of the Grande Île. These men and women are Malagasy, Portuguese, French, English, Norwegian. Sailors, clergy, writers, artists, soldiers, architects, traders, adventurers, they lived between the 15th and the 20th centuries. The country bears many features marking their passage: place names, street names, monuments, institutions, traditions.

Everyone will be able to discover or rediscover in this book the names and lives of those who contributed to building the Malagasy country that we know today and to realize that each one has a unique place in time and the place where it belongs.

A simple and clear work, which will become, through the great service it provides us all, essential to the family.

Dominique Ranaivoson is a researcher in comparative literature, literary criticism and teaching. She studied letters and history at Rheims and Paris before writing a thesis on Malagasy literature written in French at the University of Paris 13 in 2002. She collaborates regularly in various meetings and university international reviews of French literature. A French woman, she is married to a Malagasy man, a mother of four children, lives in France, and visits Madagascar regularly.
