About the Author (from the First Page)

Geraldine McCaughrean was born and educated in Enfield, North London, and is the youngest of three children. She worked as a secretary for Thames Television before taking a degree in Education at Christ Church College, Canterbury. She then worked at a London publishing house for ten years, and now writes from home, in Berkshire.
Geraldine McCaughrean's previous books include A Little Lower than the Angels, winner of the Whitbread Book of the Year Children's Novel Award in 1987, A Pack of Lies, which won the Guardian Prize and the Carnegie Medal in 1989, and Gold Dust, winner of the Beefeater Children's Novel Award in 1994. She has also adapted classic stories for children and written adult books and radio plays.
Geraldine McCaughrean married her husband, John, in 1988 and has a daughter, Ailsa, born a year later.
