MAP OF AFRICA BY GERARD MERCATOR, JUNIOR, 1628
Gerard Mercator (1512-1594) did not manage to complete his famous atlas, which did not appear until 1595, after his death. He was the grandson of the great geographer who drew the map of Africa, a simplification of the African continent extracted from the famous world map by Gerard Mercator, senior, published in 1569. Notice that the Nile river system covers most of the African continent and is thus given much too much importance. The current Zaire river is indicated by the words "r(io) de Manicongo Zaïre incolis". Regarding this, it is interesting to note that "Zaire" is a Portuguese corruption of the term "Nzadi, Nzari" (large river, great stretch of water) in use by the natives.
