"LOWER ETHIOPIA" ACCORDING TO THE FRENCH CARTOGRAPHER NICOLAS SANSON, 1655
Sanson d'Abbeville (1600-1667) founded the first French firm of atlas and maps worthy of this name. He attempted to hide his ignorance of the geography of the interior of Africa by filling the unknown areas of the continent with several mountain ranges. Note the disappearance here of monsters and other strange creatures which featured on earlier maps.
