MAP BY THE FRENCH CARTOGRAPHER NICOLAS DE FER, 1722
De Fer (1646-1720), whose atlases were especially appreciated for their decorative qualities, had already published this map in 1705. Note that for him the source of the Nile no longer lies in the lakes Zaire-Zembre and Zaflan, but well into Abyssinia. This is obviously due to the scientific influence of Guillaume de L'Isle (1675-1726), a great French geographer who occupied a position of importance amongst eighteenth-century cartographers.
